Period drama is an intriguing world with a magic all its own. It transports the audience back in time to another historical period or place, an alternative reality that is otherwise elusive. Donning period costumes, stars of the silver screen turn back the clock by millenniums, inviting the audience to an imperial banquet, the murky deep of the martial realm, haunting labyrinths of the netherworld or an encounter with the peerless beauty of a distant kingdom.
The period wardrobe is a veritable playground for costume designers. Referencing past literature, they create charming antiquated looks for historical figures, floaty, Zen-infused attires for martial fighters and surrealistic images befitting a mythical world. A wardrobe of 18 sets of period costumes weaves together the myriad of stories from different cinematic dynasties. These timeless fashion statements from movies created in the 1950s through the 2000s speak for the designers and their always glamourous on-screen models. The clock is turned back for all to travel back in time and space. Ready to get on board? |

Life would have been so different without a mobile device now, or a pager and a telephone two decades ago, or a telegram over the last century. Does a new means of communication result in superficial interactions and human apathy or is it a gateway to unprecedented intercultural and personal connections? This exhibition will explore the blended outcome of cyber and in-person communication: the conversation between the artists and the curator and the communications among the artists, their artworks and the audience. Four artists will use different objects and ways to present their perception towards communication, and investigate the role of communication in multilingual, culturally diverse urban environment and how new digital communication is expressed, understood and interpret.

We anchor our daily lives through stories. We tell ourselves who we are, and where we are. Sometimes, the stories take the forms of history, habits, news, recollection or even myths. The Oi!, a metaphor in which multiple layers of histories collide and merge, will be a point of departure. The exhibition will employ time-based media, including film, performance, and installation for visitors to contemplate and connect how our stories are narrated.

Solar painting, as a kind of photogram, belongs to alternative photography which refers to the non-traditional methods of making images, i.e. non-silver salt production in the pre-digital era. Among which, cyanotype – blue print, was an innovative technology in the photography and printing industries in the 19th century. The Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre invited the veteran artist Ms Wong Wobik to lead a group of eight participants, namely Olga Chew, Cecilia Hui, Steve Lau, Maud Pong, Grace Put, Yolanda Tse, Amy Yeung and Yuen Chi-hang to explore the cyanotype creations. The participants observed and experimented with different images and objects encountered in everyday life. With the variety of blue-print techniques learnt, they created artworks that reveal extraordinary hue, texture and charm of ordinary objects. To tie-in with "Muse Fest HK 2017", the works of participants will be displayed in the public area of the Centre for public enjoyment.

In 1991, Dr T. T. Tsui invited his friend, famous artist Huang Yongyu, to visit his first private Museum, The Tsui Museum in Hong Kong and gifted Huang a copy of the collection catalogue as souvenir. While the artist opened the catalogue, he was captivated by nine lively antique potteries with a sense of humor among the many treasures. They inspired him to create an album for them as a return of the friendship with Dr Tsui.
The name of this album, A Glimpse of Tsui's Collection, is a metaphor of the huge collection of Dr Tsui, which means the album reflects only a small group of his marvelous amount of treasures. The exhibition displays the album and seven precious funerary potteries from the Han and Tang dynasties. Being evidence of the lavish burials, they reflect the prevailing social customs and livelihoods. With the album as the prelude, the exhibition demonstrates the interaction between paintings and artefacts, and the sincere friendship between the collector and the artist. |

Nature has a wonderful rhythm, the seasons come and go along with their changing scenes.
Professor Chao Shao-an immersed himself in the inspiration of nature throughout his life. With nature as his teacher, he observed the natural world meticulously, with a unique vision to discover the ultimate beauty. He captured its essence, using superb drawing skills to create unique works of art. His brushes created flowers in full bloom, dazzling in their brilliance. His favorite noble cicadas sing loudly and clearly in the summer willows, with red lychee in abundance, the fruit of the season. Depicting a rich autumn harvest, he painted fisherman along the reed shore. He admired the plum blossoms in moonlight and enjoyed the serenity of dreamlike winter snow. In this exhibition, with the four seasons as the theme, a selection of around 40 paintings has been chosen from the museum's collection to show the beauty of the four seasons with the poetic scenery Professor Chao created. |
