Hand in Hand with Film - the Silent Translator
At the very beginning, films were silent. Dialogues were "spoken" through "intertitles" - with title cards inserted between scenes. When these early films toured to different countries, the intertitles were also translated into different languages, making it possible for the audience to enjoy films from every corner of the world no matter what language they spoke.
As technology advanced, films soon evolved from silent to sound. But intertitles did not disappear. They were transformed into "subtitles" and moved to the bottom of the screen. In the early days, subtitles were literally imprinted on films, in much the same way as words are printed on paper. Do you want to know how it is done? Come and visit the Hong Kong Film Archive and it will show you the magic of an old-style subtitling machine. You can also bring home a little souvenir of yours.

medialogue aims to spark a dialogue between art and technology, to explore the potential and capability for applying technology in the creation of art and to consider and extend the boundaries of contemporary art practices. Joined hands with different artists, it is hoped to stimulate a discussion about those practices by asking questions – about ideologies in media and art in a constantly changing sociocultural environment, about how media relate to contemporary art practices and how they cultivate aesthetic values and manifest cultural content, about the possibilities and capacity of media art, and about what kind of impact media will have on art practices today and in the future.
