Talk by Fram Kitagawa on Art Festivals in Japan and Friendship with Hong Kong
Talk by Fram Kitagawa on Art Festivals in Japan and Friendship with Hong Kong
Starting with Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Niigata Prefecture since 2000 and the Setouchi Triennale in the Seto Inland Sea since 2010, initiatives for regional revitalization with art as an intermediary set off an art festival trend throughout Japan. These art festivals have drawn international attentions in particular from Asian countries.
Stepping into its 7th edition, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale continues to use art as a catalyst to reveal existing assets of the region, rediscover their values, communicate these to the world and find a way to revitalise the region. The connections with Hong Kong began with university students who joined as part of the Kohebi Volunteer troops in 2006, following with the participations of artists and different groups of varies genres ranging from visual art, performance, agriculture and educational institutions. In 2018 summer, Hong Kong House, a sustainable platform concerning exchanges of cultures and communications through art beyond nations, will be established.
In this talk, Mr Fram Kitagawa, General Director of the two most prestigious land art festivals, will outline his socially engaged and environmentally conscious vision of contemporary art that has brought hundreds of international artists to the mountains of Niigata and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, as well as to highlight the footsteps of Hong Kong.
Dr Lesley Lau who has profound experience in promoting public and community art in Hong Kong will exchange ideas from her unique local experience with Mr Fram Kitagawa, the renowned curator and founder of land art festivals in Japan. Mr Alexander Hui, the pioneer who has organised student volunteer teams to join the land art festivals, will respond and share his in-situ experience.
Enrollment: Application was closed on June 19. Since applications are oversubscribed, a draw will be conducted to select the participants. The Organiser will send a confirmation via email to the successful applicants on or after June 21. Applicants should assume their applications unsuccessful if they do not receive the confirmation email up to two days before the programme commences.
