Experiencing the Tales of the Old Hong Kong - Cheongsam & Nanyin Party
What is your impression about cheongsam (also known as Qipao) and Nanyin, a kind of traditional music popular in Hong Kong in the 1920s? Some would relate delicately crafted cheongsam as gorgeousness and Nanyin as Hong Kong-style blues or rap song. If you want to discover more stories of these Hong Kong cultural genres, don't miss the party.
At the party, there will be a sharing session with renowned image director Tina Liu expounding on the beauty and tasteful way in wearing cheongsam; and the music group The Gong Strikes One will premiere their new pieces of bardic music in Cantonese Nanyin. You can also get a feel of the twenties of Hong Kong by strolling in the faux city streets of old in clean-cut cheongsam.
Party tips: Dress in your own cheongsam for the party on June 23 to enjoy 5% discount at the City Café of the Hong Kong Museum of History and to get a chance to win a souvenir.^

"The Sewing Techniques of Hong Kong-style Cheongsam and Kwan Kwa Wedding Costume" is one of the items on the first Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong. Men's cheongsam carries important social meanings as it was worn during traditional rituals to signify the social identity of elder members among clans in the New Territories. Hong Kong picked up the fashion trend of women's cheongsam in the 1930s, the cut of it soon incorporated Western sewing techniques, and distinct local-style cheongsam had been developed following different trends. In this activity, the cheongsam sewing master will show the steps of making a piece of cheongsam, enabling participants to learn more about this Intangible Cultural Heritage.
