Claude Monet: The Spirit of Place

The Impressionist master Claude Monet (1840-1926) is undoubtedly one of the greatest landscape artists in the history of Western art. For nearly 70 years on his artistic journey, he tirelessly depicted the essence or spirit of different landscapes. Collaborating with Le French May and the Réunion des musées nationaux – Grand Palais, this exhibition, featuring some of Monet's very emblematic artworks conserved in private and French public collections, presents the spirit of place and the artist's legacy through the imperceptible differences captured over hours, days and seasons.

After traveling around, Monet settled in Giverny, where he created numerous famous paintings. In the education gallery of the exhibition, reconstructed scenes are set up to resemble various spots in Monet's home, studio and garden, giving visitors the opportunity to see the connection between Monet's life and works from different perspectives.

Bowls in Style

The well-known Japanese designer Issey Miyake once said "Design is not for Philosophy, it's for life!" Only when design connects closely with life can it move the hearts of men and arouse resonance.

Collaborated with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), vA! has launched "Bowls in Style", a local culture cum ceramics design workshop, from February to June. With the distinctive local cultures of 18 districts in Hong Kong as the theme, some 30 design students of the HKDI transformed the local characteristics into innovative design elements. Under the guidance of ceramic artist Jakie Leung, they rendered their ideas on bowls and created "Hong Kong-style" ceramics, blending design and ceramics with local culture.

To share with the public, these works will be displayed during the Muse Fest HK period.

Doing Nothing Garden Hong Kong

Song Dong's project Doing Nothing Garden has built a potted landscape on the lawn of Oi! using excess resource from the community – waste. The neon signs, which highlight the artist's notion on doing something, doing nothing, wasting something and wasting nothing, clearly reveals the concept behind the work. The potted landscape created at the Doing Nothing Garden becomes an epitome of society that hints at the wasting of resources and the futility of the efforts invested.

The Four Seasons

Nature has a wonderful rhythm, the seasons come and go along with their changing scenes.

Professor Chao Shao-an immersed himself in the inspiration of nature throughout his life. With nature as his teacher, he observed the natural world meticulously, with a unique vision to discover the ultimate beauty. He captured its essence, using superb drawing skills to create unique works of art. His brushes created flowers in full bloom, dazzling in their brilliance. His favorite noble cicadas sing loudly and clearly in the summer willows, with red lychee in abundance, the fruit of the season. Depicting a rich autumn harvest, he painted fisherman along the reed shore. He admired the plum blossoms in moonlight and enjoyed the serenity of dreamlike winter snow.

In this exhibition, with the four seasons as the theme, a selection of around 40 paintings has been chosen from the museum's collection to show the beauty of the four seasons with the poetic scenery Professor Chao created.

A Glimpse of Tsui's Collection

In 1991, Dr T. T. Tsui invited his friend, famous artist Huang Yongyu to visit his first private Museum The Tsui Museum in Hong Kong and gifted Huang a copy of the collection catalogue as souvenir. While the artist opened the catalogue, he was captivated by nine lively antique potteries with a sense of humor among the many treasures. They inspired him to create an album for them as a return of the friendship with Dr Tsui.

The name of this album, A Glimpse of Tsui's Collection, is a metaphor of the huge collection of Dr Tsui, which means this album reflects only a small group of his marvelous amount of treasures.

The exhibition displays the album and seven precious funerary potteries from the Han and Tang dynasties. Being evidence of the lavish burials, they reflect the prevailing social customs and livelihoods. With the album as the prelude, the exhibition demonstrates the interaction between paintings and artefacts, and the sincere friendship between collector and artist.
