Online Exhibition In collaboration with the Palace Museum, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department is staging the "Traversing the Forbidden City" series. Through specific themes, the series introduces the profound historical culture and wisdom of the Forbidden City. To ride of the first exhibition Traversing the Forbidden City – Architecture and Craftsmanship in 2019, the series launched four online exhibitions, namely The Common Folks behind the Vermilion Walls, Masterpieces behind the Vermilion Walls, Sentiments and Sensibilities behind the Vermilion Walls and Life of Fusion behind the Vermilion Walls. The exhibitions introduce the Forbidden City from an array of aspects and different stories, connecting our everyday lives.

  1. The Common Folks behind the Vermilion Walls
    The exhibition spotlights the lesser-known inhabitants of the palace, their duties and expertise. It offers a glimpse into the world of the ordinary people for a better understanding of life at the imperial palace.

  2. Masterpieces behind the Vermilion Walls
    The exhibition illustrates the pursuit of exquisiteness in aesthetics in five senses of sight, taste, smell, sound and touch.

  3. Sentiments and Sensibilities behind the Vermilion Walls
    The exhibition looks at the underlying emotions in four relationships: the familial love between the young and the old, the romantic love between husband and wife, as well as the sentiments between emperor and ministers and between tutor and student.

  4. Life of Fusion behind the Vermilion Walls
    Through exploring the items in the Forbidden City that have a Western connection, the exhibition shows the palace's interaction with Western civilisation, and the exchange in ideas between East and West.
