What is science fiction (sci-fi)? Is Sci-fi film the representation of this genre of creative works?
Sci-fi, a product of scientific revolution in the modern era, is rooted in science and driven by the force of imagination. No matter in literature, arts or film, sci-fi has become a source of inspiration in the world of science and technology. Scientists and sci-fi authors inspire each other, pushing forward the development of science and technology of tomorrow.
The Hong Kong Science Museum is going to stage the “Science Fiction: Voyage to the Edge of Imagination” exhibition in December that will take you on a fascinating journey to explore strange new worlds. Before embarking on the adventure, let’s warm up ourselves with a party to celebrate imagination. Various cultural sections of the Department get together to organise the party which will offer participants an abundance of fun and creative programmes, including sci-fi movies screening, music performance, magic show, exhibits display, sci-fi interactive workshop, reading zone, science talk, booth activity and etc.
With “Nano World” as the theme, the outreach vehicle “Gear Up” brought by the Science Promotion Unit will introduce nano science and showcase the applications of nanotechnology in our daily lives with a classic mini exhibition van, panels in comic style and interactive exhibits. Those who are interested in exploring how science is portrayed by the sci-fi creative works should not miss the interactive workshop to be led by a local sci-fi author who will share his series of works.
The colourful “Library-on-Wheels” will take you on a journey to the boundless world of knowledge with about 300 books in different themes selected by the Hong Kong Public Libraries. And the Interactive Storytelling Device "A Walk to Children’s Classics” will bring you into different stories settings. By controlling the avatar characters with motion detection devices, you will be able to experience a dynamic way of reading.
Music ignites imagination. Come and join the Music Office Youth String Orchestras and Symphonic Band to experience it through the respective two “Sci-Fi.Time Travel” concerts. They will lead you to a musical voyage through the realms of science fantasy and transcending the boundaries of time and space. You will also be able to recollect the memories of some sci-fi film classics from the film music featured in the performances.
Is magic a type of science or a form of art? What is digital magic and what is mentalism in magic? The “In Your Sight, In Your Mind 2.0” presented by the Community Programmes Office will show you side by side these two distinctive styles of magic performance. By adding elements of science and technology, the performance will offer you opportunity to enjoy the art of magic both visually and mentally.
How could sci-fi movies be absent in the Fiesta? The “Sci-Fi and Animation Films Screening” by the Film Programmes Office will bring adults and kids two surprises – the sci-fi classic Frankenstein (1931) and the animation movie Big Hero 6 (2014). Exploring humanity and the qualifications that make someone human, the Frankenstein is known to be an atmospheric macabre masterpiece that holds the audience spellbound with deft direction and stunning visuals. The Big Hero 6 tells the story of a young robotics prodigy teaming up with his robot and friends of various talents to form the high-tech Big Hero 6, saving the defenceless in the city, an entertaining plot with uplifting themes for all ages.
A group of Little Museum KOL, who are nature lovers and captivated by the wonders of science, are invited to join professional speakers and museum curators to deliver a series of “Science Discovery Talks”. Let’s join them to explore the fascinating world of everyday science.
The “Conservator's Ingenious Trick - Agar Gel” booth activity by the Conservation Office will enable you to learn about the ingenious applications of an innovative material in the conservation of cultural heritage.
The Hong Kong Science Museum offers an enjoyable learning experience with inspiring interactive exhibits which allow visitors to explore the fun of science. Do grasp the opportunity to visit the exhibitions featured at the museum and take part in the “Quiz & Stamp Collection” game. You may be able to win specially designed museum souvenirs. Last but not the least, there will be fun photo-taking and workshop to make your day. Save the dates and join us with family and friends!
